The $100 bill is in the register because it was used for a purchase. What if the customer had kept the $100 bill and paid with $70 in small bills or by credit card?
Some people in an earlier thread got hung up on the same bill issue, thought “paying him with his own money” was significant to the puzzle. It’s not, but it’s a major red herring.

$80 was lost by store owner.

I think an even clearer way to put it is if the thief took the $100 to another store owned by the same person and made the purchase, how much has the owner lost? Still $100, but not quite same reason as CJ explained.
