To help frame the analysis correctly, what would you say the store’s loss was if the customer paid for the goods with $70 in cash? Or by credit card?

Because the stolen $100 bill is used for the subsequent purchase, we want to think the two transactions are somehow linked. But are they?

What if the customer came back in 6 months and made the purchase with the stolen bill?

Would have to be either $180 if goods can be reordered or $200 if not, no? $100 for the bill which is toast, $30 in change, and either $50 to reorder goods or $70 if they can’t be reordered.

ha, already realized I’m wrong, the $100 isn’t toast but it never had value so it’s just $80 or $100

Guy walked in with nothing, and walked out with $30 in cash and $50 in merchandise. Why isn't $80 an option?
-
That’s an interesting framing. But we want to know the store owner’s loss.
