i don't know that we'll ever get an honest count of how many deaths the virus caused or what the contagion rate is because we don't/can't test enough and every government seems afraid to learn their local truth

if someone dies with covid-19 symptoms but was never tested, how do you count that? how can you? that person's family will consider it a death from coronavirus but the official records may either list a pre-existing condition or some general respiratory infection.

maybe some future medical historian/statistician will look back and extrapolate the actual rate of covid-related deaths from the spike but even then, good luck to that person parsing the infection deaths from the collateral damage due to system overload and triage.

plus there appears to be a contrarian/right-wing effort to write out multi-factor deaths where pre-existing conditions were exacerbated by covid-19. which is nonsense, of course. a person surviving condition A who couldn't fight of COVID-19 is a casualty of COVID-19.

Replying to @Ugarles
There was a good WSJ article about the death toll in Italy likely being far above “official” or “confirmed” deaths. They looked at average seasonal death rates and how far above it Italy is this year. Pretty astonishing results.
