Today: Save us, Mitt Romney! Tomorrow: What?!? Mike Pence becomes president? He’s even worse than Trump!

Naww. Pence is just a generically awful Republican. You know, the kind that will argue today that it’s hunky-dory to treat gays like second class citizens. Definitely an upgrade from the disaster that is Trump.

Yes, Pence hates gays and Mitt Romney throws cancer patients out the window, I know. Every Republican doesn't just disagree with you but is an awful human. Can't imagine how Trump got in.

I actually like Romney. Pence’s record on gays is indisputable. The Republican Party history on gay rights is also indisputable from Reagan to Trump, including today’s SCOTUS argument.

Mike Pence, gay ally: * Is polite to gay people * Claims being LGBT is a choice * Opposed local & state anti-discrimination laws protecting LGBT * Opposed ENDA * Opposed DADT repeal & advocated for military ban on LGBT * Opposed hate crime protection for LGBT

Interesting you only really dispute if Pence supported gay conversion therapy. Setting aside whether that was a dog whistle or not, what in Pence’s history of political positions makes you think he has any empathy or support for LGBT people?

I’m not defending what the Republican Party has been on gay rights (although some things you list had Dem support too), just that Pence is uniquely anti-gay. It’s a weird charge. No one else gets “omgomg he’s standing next to a gay person” coverage.

Couple of thoughts. It’s various right wing media members who have been pushing this odd argument that Pence was nice to some gays so he can’t possibly be anti-gay, never mind his prior statements and policy positions.

The difference with Pence (as opposed to, say, Mitt Romney, Jen Bush, or Marco Rubio), is that Pence built his political career as a vocal leader on various anti-gay issues. So he deservedly gets attention on gay issues that other Republicans don’t get.

FWIW, I believe Pence is genuinely nice to gay people he encounters. That doesn’t mean he wouldn’t pursue anti-gay policies if he became President.
