These fears have kept the US from building new plants. In 2010, Pres Obama announced funding towards the first new nuclear plants in decades, but I don't think that ever got off the ground. It's a shame.

Lessons learned from the TMI accident drove up the construction costs of the plants started in the 80s by billions per unit. Then when the push for new plants were getting going again in the early 2010s Fukushima happened.
