I used to just assume everyone knew all the words to American Pie. Now I wonder if no one really does anymore or no one ever really did. This is the plight of being an old soul

"American Pie" is, at best, indicative of a middle-aged soul.

A friend pointed out that song came out 12 years before I was born, whereas a newly-minted adult would comparably know a song from 1989. So I am choosing to believe all the young'uns out there know the words to Madonna's Like A Prayer

"Like a Prayer" is a great song, but it's simply not comparable to the lasting cultural impact and sing-along nature of "American Pie." Very, very few songs are comparable to "American Pie" in this respect.

Yeah I can't really come up with too many newer ones. Don't Stop Believen? I only learned Bohemian Rhapsody bc of Wayne's World?

Being an iconic song strongly associated with a popular movie or TV show is a huge advantage here. "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Don't Stop Believin'" both qualify.

Don’t Stop Believin’ is a great analogue.
