If those are the only choices, it's got to be several. A couple is two and only two. A few may be more appropriate than several.

I strongly disagree and hear me out. When you use couple in this context, you are ballparking. If it only meant 2, it would not be a ballpark. It would be an exact count. So a couple is 2 or 3.

That's "a couple or so." Any "proof" provided to the contrary is just more dumbing down of America. Like how you can say "over 500" instead of "more than 500" just because people kept saying it.

In all sincerity, I have never heard the phrase "a couple or so" in my entire life

That's likely because people appropriately moved from couple to few when moving from 2 to three! Also, your question was what was appropriate for the number 3... not an undetermined number like the definition you provided.

If I said I bought you a couple of presents and brought you 3 vs saying I bought ou several presents and bringing 3, you would feel very differently. If you told me a few and brought 3, I would be disappointed

That's just about managing expectations. If I said I accidentally burned down a couple of your homes and it was actually 3, you'd be upset. If I said I burned down several of your homes and it was actually 3, you'd be relieved.

The important takeaway is that a couple of hot dogs are more filling than several sandwiches.
