Worth remembering: in summer 17 the standard conservative line on peaceful protests that blocked streets was “run them over with your car” w/multiple bills proposed by Republicans to make it legal to do so The newspapers were mostly worried about the civility of punching a Nazi.

Again: murdering peaceful protesters with a car was a standard mainstream conservative position in summer 2017, and then in summer 2017 a Nazi ran over a peaceful protester with a car, and then the President reminded us there were some very fine people among the Nazis.

By summer 2018 the narrative was about how dangerous and violent the left had become, maybe, potentially, at some future point. Also in 2018 a white supremacist, inspired by the president, murdered 11 people in a Pittsburgh synagogue. Anyway the car-murdering Nazi cried.

It really cannot be stressed enough that what Heather Heyer’s murderer did was exactly what thousands and thousands of mainstream conservatives were saying people should do to peaceful protesters in streets, back in the summer of 2017.

Ideas can capture groups of people, you know. Once the idea of running over protesters with cars took hold in the mainstream conservative mind, someone was going to die that way. It happened to be Heather Heyer. The person who did it happened to be a Nazi. Huh. Weird.

Remember Glenn Reynolds, a/k/a @lnstapundit? He tweeted to “run them down” about Black Lives Matter protestors. Now he lectures us that Twitter is “a breeding ground for thoughtlessness and contempt.” 🤔 https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2018/12/03/twitter-facebook-social-media-bias-political-poison-blogosphere-instapundit-column/2183648002/ …

Yes. I presume he meant “run them POLITELY down.”
