And unfortunately, that same degree of class was not exhibited eight years later.

It was. Here is a link to the letters. Obama left one also but I don’t think it’s public (didn’t check). https://www.ajc.com/news/these-are-the-letters-presidents-leave-their-successors/60WgQr4XUhqWMqt36JhCFI/amp.html …

@tennesseejc I don't want to get in a tit-for-tat, but to me what is remarkable specifically about Bush's letter is that it took place just two months after the election to the man he was writing the letter to. /13 replies 0 retweets 0 likes -

You guys are probably too young to remember but I do recall how contentious that election campaign was. Clinton and his team said many vicious things about Bush in order to defeat him (and vice-versa, to be fair). The letter seems especially forgiving. /2

Bush the Elder’s 1988 campaign manager was Lee Atwater, who perfected racist campaigning, including the infamous Willie Horton attack ad. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Atwater …

I saw Mike Dukakis at the Illinois Old States Capitol summer 1988. Virtually nobody was there to listen.

Question isn’t whether Dukakis had a shot. Just dispelling this suggestion that Bush I was a noble saint on the campaign trail.

True. But Atwater took vicious to a real extreme. He openly admitted he was race-baiting in his campaigns.
