Does anyone know off-hand the last time a president filled a seat on the Supreme Court vacated by someone placed there by a president from the other party?

I forgot a couple: Sotomayor (Obama) for Souter (Reagan) Breyer (Clinton) for Blackmun (Nixon) But Souter and Blackmun had moved left, so not really an ideological change.

Okay, that makes sense... I guess I was looking for an ideological replacement anyway, so your first example fulfills that.

Since 1980, justices have been careful to retire when a president of their ideology is in office. Marshall (poor health) and Scalia (really poor health) were the only exceptions.
