RAGE (riders against gender exclusion) was created in response. the organizing group rallied around miss charlene and challenged the city’s about the antiquated gender markers. in 2013, after years of organizing & advocacy, the gender markers were dropped from transit passes.

cindy, terry & rhona continue to tour as the current line-up of en vogue. dawn still records and maxine is minding her gawd damn business. i am still holding out for a reunion tour. or at the very least, meet them to thank them personally for the impact they have had on my life.

i have many memories of me and my childhood best robert lip-syncing and dancing to en vogue songs. oh the many nights we’d argue over which member was our avatar. “no, i’m terry!, you’re dawn!” or “can i be maxine for this song because i love her outfit in the video.”

since 2000, the group has gone through numerous line-up changes. rhona bennett was added to the line-up after maxine’s exit in 2994. in 2019, the original members were joined by new member for a reunion performance. sadly, it was just for one night.

that same year, en vogue released “masterpiece theatre,” their second album as a trio. “riddle,” the only single to be released was a bop but with music swaying more pop and youthful, en vogue struggled at radio. this was their last major label release.

in the summer of 2000, dawn was experiencing critical & commercial success as one-third of the group, lucy pearl. their single “dance tonight” reached #5 on r&b & cracked the pop top 40. sadly, dawn would exit the group soon after the release of the follow-up single.

the group forged ahead as a trio & released “EV3” after having to re-record songs where dawn’s voice was prominent. the album’s official lead single, “whatever” was released in may of 1997 & peaked at #16 pop. music critics citied that the dark video alienated fans. BULLSHIT!
