I'm saddened but unsurprised by Peter Dutton's budget reply. We are a sophisticated, multicultural, modern Australia, something we ought to be proud of. But Peter Dutton wants to take us back to a world of closed borders to cover up his government's nine years of inaction.

“Rabbit’s clever,” said Pooh thoughtfully. “Yes,” said Piglet, “Rabbit’s clever.” “And he has Brain.” “Yes,” said Piglet, “Rabbit has Brain.” There was a long silence. “I suppose,” said Pooh, “that that’s why he never understands anything.” ~A.A.Milne #thursdaymorning

And now the Greens Party have just teamed up with the Libs, Nats & Hanson to delay urgent family law reform that would improve safety for women and children - on the heels of voting to delay our bill to boost funding for affordable housing. Shameful.

In their electorates, Greens MPs are campaigning to stop new housing developments. In Canberra, they’re voting with Peter Dutton and Pauline Hanson to stop new housing funds. If they really want more housing, they should work with Labor to pass legislation TODAY.

A BTS shot! Leaving the chamber after budget night after ensuring cost of living relief and strengthening Medicare is front and centre of our Budget. This is when the real work begins to deliver for Aus families so we can have a stronger, more resilient economy in the future.

The greens are allergic to affordable housing. It’s how they police inclusion to the leafy little neighbourhoods they don’t want to share. We went through this in Victoria for years. Affordable housing enables social and economic transformation. Blocking reveals much. #auspol

Labor and the Independents are trying to pass a bill to build more social housing including 4,000 homes for people fleeing domestic violence. The Liberals and the Greens have just blocked it from being passed in the Senate. The Liberals are a lost cause, but for goodness sake,… Show more

BREAKING: The Greens have just voted with the Libs/Nats in the Senate to prevent a vote this week on Labor’s Housing Fund that would see 30,000 social & affordable houses built. It makes no sense that the would block these laws from passing parliament this week! #auspol
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The bill does not guarantee 30,000 houses will be built. As per Clause 36 (p. 15), it would fund a maximum of $500m a year towards building grants - in 5 years, it will fund $2.5 billion in grants, or $83,333 per house if the goal of 30,000 houses are built. A big win in the budget tonight! $121 million to establish a National EPA. LEAN campaigned for, and won a commitment to an EPA at the 2018 Labor National Conference. Now in government it is being delivered.

Single mothers reclaimed “respect” in the 2023 budget. Tonight we were not afraid, we were visible, valued & heard. A cultural shift. Tonight families will feel the power of hope.

A Budget shaped by empathy. It’s been decades since we have seen this. No. It does not fix everything but it places the Labor government firmly into the corner of caring and trying to help. That’s all voters want. They don’t expect miracles but they do want and demand empathy.… Show more
