SBBOT have been monitoring Turnstone populations in the Thanet Coast SPA for the last 20 years. The data shows an even greater decline than this study. Disturbance continues to be the main cause of wader assemblage decline in East Kent.https://twitter.com/GrahamFAppleton/status/1224370822741139457 …

There have been major declines in GB and Irish wintering Knot (islandica) flocks, as you can read here: https://wadertales.wordpress.com/2019/03/14/do-population-estimates-matter/ … and here: https://wadertales.wordpress.com/2019/04/05/irelands-wintering-waders/ … but not on the huge scale seen in flocks in Western Africa (canutus), as revealed by

Fascinating, nice work. Turtle Dove demise hits home. 3,600 TD territories in GB - e.g. plenty more Black Grouse (4,850 males), Red Kite (4,350 pairs), Ring-necked Parakeet (whopping 12,000 prs). Nightingales (5,100 male) not much rosier.

Great news from Myanmar for
#WorldWetlandsDay. Politicians are now supporting threatened species and habitats on East Asian-Australasian Flyway - truly inspiring. A what? A Grey Plover? What's that? I spent three years finding out, and it led me on an odyssey across the globe and into myself. Launch of my book 'Flight Lines' is this week in Hobart, next week in Melbourne. And here's the fleeting beauty. (Pic: Heather Alexander)pic.twitter.com/e1vJJUCmi9

I’m currently working on a project about birds on the brink of extinction for which I’ve been speaking to ornithologists, gamekeepers, animal rights activists, farmers, writers and musicians - the extent to which people are thoughtful, pragmatic, and generous is truly inspiring

Just a quick reminder on
#WorldWetlandsDay that, not content with building houses on the available brownfield site, Portsmouth City Council are currently progressing plans to fill in heavily designated intertidal wetlands to squeeze a few more in.https://twitter.com/WordsFromWez/status/1175698337913344000 …
