TAG has an obligation to uphold a signed contract. Otherwise it would appear meaningless to studios and then harder to the defend the rest of the crew who must work under it. Also union contracts don’t set maximums. Studios are welcome to pay TAG writers WGA rates at any time.

TAG sues to keep writers under worse contracts, and then when it comes time for negotiations they cry poverty and say they can’t afford labor lawyers to help improve their deal. They’re a complete joke of a union that treats writers like dirt. Trust me, I’ve lived it. 1/

I did WGA strike media training just now and these are the top three most important things I took from it about communicating to the press on and off the line:
- Always stay positive
- Never crap on other workers (ex "They're turning us into Uber drivers!")
- Be clear, no bits

Here’s another way writers save money during production. Kroll Show was a sketch show with a strong bias against company moves during the day. We refused to spend the time and money. Once we had a location, we always wrote more material for the location until we’d filled the day.

For those saying writers (most of whom hold 2nd jobs, btw) are "rich," let me put it in a way that may make more sense to you: 1 script made into a film creates btwn 200 & 1000+ jobs. A successful film brings in 100s of millions+ in revenue, $0 of which is shared with the writer.
