This argument often gets stuck on their name. That's a detail. The issue is sensationalized reporting. But yes play down name, too.
"What about finding out the motive"? These events are not isolated. There's a pattern. Much more important to understand the pattern.
We get this with ISIS. Killing for publicity should not be rewarded with sensationalized publicity. Report, but not on the killers terms.
These killers are often obsessed with press coverage previous ones got. They openly ponder the numbers, realize more victims more coverage.
Many of these killers are aggrieved, isolated and angry. In their disordered mind, mass murder is a way to get infamy. They know it works.
Reporting differently is not censorship. Media makes editorial choices everyday. Nobody reports every possible version of a story.
