Signing Less Is More and my recent executive order were important first steps to help address the situation on Rikers. Today, I’m announcing that nearly all women and trans individuals will be transferred from Rikers Island to safer, more secure State facilities.
This temporary transfer will help ease staffing concerns, capacity constraints, and improve safety for many until the City can implement a permanent solution that will bring justice to Rikers, and I thank the City for its partnership.
We are grateful for this temporary effort to keep mothers and women safe. We hope as many women as possible are able to be released into community care.
Does that mean I can identify myself as a woman if I get caught stealing weed again and transfer out of Rikers?
What about access to family, court, and counsel?
So what politics played out that they went to Westchester as opposed to Nassau or suffolk?
The City is the problem.
This will be permanent & grow. Closing Rikers & setting up insufficient unexpandable jails in NYC will never be enough space & inmates will be separated from support & recidivize at higher rates. Rebuild Rikers better, don't divide into borough jails.
The city let the problem with Rikers get out of hand. This was a long time coming, what confidence can be given to the city to remedy the situation?
