Like every American, I remember exactly where I was when the planes hit on Sept 11, 2001. It is a sad and solemn day for us. My heart goes out to every person who lost a dear one.

The nuclear attacks at Hiroshima and Nagasaki were so horrific that they created not a precedent but a 77-year taboo. The Kremlin should not be eager to break it.

Vladimir Putin: "The United States is the only country in history that has used nuclear weapons. Creating, by the way, a precedent." This second phrase about the "precedent" is very disturbing

#September11 is a somber day at #NATO, as we remember the attack on our Ally the United States. The attack resulted in the 1st invocation of Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, our trigger for mutual defense. Allies stood together on that occasion & will stand together in future.

I mourn the passing of Secretary of State George Shultz, a great statesman and wonderful human being. I am glad I could celebrate his 100th birthday with him in December, with a crowd of his many admirers. He was a true leader on nuclear disarmament.

After many years of hard work on this issue, I am sorry to see this day come. #NATO will do what is necessary to ensure its deterrence and defence, in a balanced, coordinated and defensive manner. Read the statement by the North Atlantic Council in 🇷🇺: bit.ly/2Kf7P3n

Today, the #INFTreaty ceases to exist. Russia bears sole responsibility for the Treaty’s demise. #NATO will respond in a measured & responsible way and continue to ensure credible deterrence & defence. NATO statement: bit.ly/2OuadY3

Important to remember that for all the nuclear saber-rattling, there have been no apparent changes to Russia’s nuclear posture since the war started besides personnel increases. countries should maintain and intensify their support for Ukraine despite Putin’s latest threats
Quote Tweet
.@NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg to @Reuters on Putin’s “dangerous and reckless nuclear rhetoric”: “It’s not new... He knows very well that a #nuclear war should never be fought & cannot be won.” “So far we have not seen any changes in their nuclear posture…but we stay vigilant”.

What impact might new technologies have on second-strike deterrence? My new article takes an early look at this crucial question and what we can do about it. Thank you to for publishing it in a special issue honoring the great Janne Nolan.

10 years ago Russia recognized #Georgia’s regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states. #NATO will never accept this. We continue to call on Russia to reverse these decisions and respect Georgia’s borders.

Heartening to think that while I was the first woman to lead a major U.S. arms control delegation, I certainly won’t be the last. Our strategic stability delegation is already full of brilliant leaders: Jenkins, , Mallory Stewart, Leonor Tomero.
Left to right: Leonor Tomero, Bonnie Jenkins, Alexandra Bell, Mallory Stewart.

"No woman had ever led a negotiation about nuclear arms reduction in the fifty-year history of US & Soviet/Russian negotiations… it was going to rouse discomfort." More of this excerpt from @Gottemoeller's book "Negotiating the New START Treaty" at ow.ly/BYZ950FNDFO

Warmest congratulations to my boss, Jens Stoltenberg, for his extension! #NATO is lucky to have such a steady hand at the tiller in these busy times.

Honoured by the decision by the #NATO Allies to extend my term as Secretary General until 30 September 2022. Together we will continue to adapt & modernise our Alliance to keep it fit for the future: bit.ly/2JK1fDD

Beautiful commemorations of #DDAY75. Struck by what said: ‘I express the hope that this commemoration event will allow all generations in Europe & the whole world, to strongly reassert that peace is based on the respect of each person, whatever his or her background.'
