If you get crap GCSE rules know mine were pretty bad and I have no professional qualifications for my work field and I did okay.

I'm actually surprised to hear this :o would you agree that qualifications makes it easier in most cases, but isn't the "be all end all"?
I've never been asked for qualifications. I took a job as an apprentice 18 years ago - terrible pay at first but rest was history.
