I'd like to add that app whitelisting was great at the peak of Java/Flash drive-by attacks. Only allow XYZ.exe spawn out of java.exe etc.
AppLocker -> Deny .exe in %AppData% %AppDataRoaming% and %Temp% stops 99% of stuff nowadays still. PowerShell, macros etc.
