Office will do this without OLE, a template URL will make an outbound request with no notice, phishery uses this:https://github.com/ryhanson/phishery …

If the template is modified to file:// uri's office will happily send creds outbound via SMB aswell

Microsoft issued a patch in this area in April, but didn't touch that issue as it is by design. It works great as a way to track people.
