What you're seeing is work being done further up field in high end enterprise protection flowing back into Windows 10 base OS with Defender.
It's going to be of serious concern to traditional AV players. But the more data and protection the better, I think.

I don’t disagree that the new protections are welcome, the latest build (in the slow ring anyway) suffers from much worse performance

Am I think it has a lot to do with the new Data Protections settings, etc. They need to work that out before the next wide release.

They are already concerned/threatened. Have been sitting in a sales meeting and if Defender/Endpoint Protection comes up they trash it hard.
