Go work as a network engineer at a company that has a big security department. Do some Sec Certs try for internal move.

Yep. Or find gaps in current employer around security you can help fill. Sometimes best employees are ones places already have.

I like a broad, general IT background. Good to know how stuff integrates and talks to each other.

Nah. Broad experiences, enthusiasm and you can be trained. Uni grad with no experience is harder to fit into the enterprise imho.
