The situation is comically bad, there are vendors advertising they combat unknown exploits when they don't even hook SMB to combat known.

Unfortunately no, it's too risky. They have millions of dollars and usually very aggressive with research. I need to think how to approach.

Why are they down? I would expect the attacker to keep them up and running for his purposes. Is someone pwning vuln PCs just to trash them?

My bet is multiple attackers fighting over the same turf. If they don't know each other are there, it's easy to screw up.
