Reminds me that French is the traditional lingua franca (no pun intended) of diplomacy... not a key attribute of academics...

It shifts over time. The Treaty of Versailles was the first treaty that had the English and the French texts be equally valid (Wilson insisted). Now, the English text dominates. Latin was much more common than French before the nineteenth century.

Good summary. Curious that Chinese is not mentioned for the future (in the short essay). It may change...

The book goes into that in the conclusion. Short form: having one language is historically anonalous; it is unlikely that a decline of English will be replaced by a single new dominant language, though another pluralism with Chinese is thinkable.
