Those are just different job markets, no? So my point is relevant for the market that I was (obviously) talking about.

This is nuts. The fact the story has a happy ending does not make it ok.

Is change possible? Does anyone in academia have incentive to change? Honestly, are current faculty and admins going to start telling potential grad students, "No, don't bring your tuition dollars and cheap labor to our department, because you probably won't find work after"?

This described my experience on the job market and my postdoc advisor's. All my students now train to get jobs outside academia.

this is disheartening
and what if you’re in a couple where you’re both wanting to be in academia? omg
-
It IS disheartening. When I was starting out, I had no idea faculty jobs were so hard to come by. It’s great folks are learning this reality. If that’s your dream, chase it (+ learn to write grants, as $ matters). And be open-there are MANY great alternatives outside of academia.
