I don't think I ever used Google Play Music but once in a while it would popup a notification on my phone about a new release with a fairly good accuracy (in terms of what I may like). Using YouTube's data?
Good question – yes, history in the main YouTube app and Google Play Music are synced, as well as with YouTube Music. That's why you'd get similar music/video recommendations on those apps. Hope it helps clarify!
