There is a new issue agenda. Europe is moving rightwards. Unless the centre-left finds something meaningful to say it will be cast aside, not least because these issues will only likely become more important to voters (migration, ethnic change, unresolved refugee crisis, etc)

If you've been to my talks on the big macro trends in the West this will not surprise you... problem for the EU is not just the new issue agenda but that Euroscepticism is merging with identity & security threats whereas in 80s/90s it was far more a fringe constitutional issue

Here is a nice visual of the data I shared yesterday on immigration concerns in Europepic.twitter.com/UsX8FVFoC8

The results are also proof that constant drip feed xenophobia and fear of terrorists in the media has been incredibly effective in poisoning European countries populace against the ‘other’ and helped serving govts get away w/ mad austerity measures and erosion of civil liberties!
-
Really? Proof?
-
That’s such rubbish. Immigration has been a concern for most people for YEARS & political parties have consistently ignored them. Not only that, but govs have made the rights of immigrants & would-be terrorists a priority. Of course people have had enough!
-
I am sick & tired of hearing about racism & xenophobia. Truth is, most people generally have NO problem with the ‘other’ as long as said other is willing to adapt and be integrated. It’s really not that difficult to understand.
-
We tolerate English ppl here in Wales despite their refusal to integrate/learn language. France & Spain seem to manage too.
-
Such bigoted attitudes are such an embarrassment to Wales,I suppose that remark should include myself I was born in Wales I am not fluent Welsh nor are many of my Welsh friends a common worldwide language can only strengthen the unity of the worlds peoples,

-
The only socially acceptable racism in Wales and Scotland is directed at the English.
-
100% true. I was raised to dislike the English, only in the last few years have my parents decided we have bigger fish to fry than disliking our British brothers and sisters.

Do you know of any similar polls for non-EU countries?
-
Hi there are lots e.g. Pew, Transatlantic, Gallup
-
Thanks, I'll take a look
-
How did you get on?
-
Found one gallup one which, as you'd expect, showed immigration as top non-economy concern in US. Imagine that these two answers are, sadly, common around the world
-
I thought as much. You won't find me with a placard in Dover proclaiming "Refugees Welcome"

-
Damn.
-
I won't drive to Dover, it's too far.

Matthew, how does that compare to results from a few years ago?
-
Hi Tim, will check their archives, but basic story from 2013-ish onwards is big boost in immigration/terrorism concerns, hope you are well
-
Would be worth looking at the trends. I’d suspect economic concerns would have been higher in a number of those countries a few years ago. The trends could be useful indicators for support for parties with certain appeals. I’m OK thanks, although not very productive today

-
Thank you/ ευχαριστώ! That’s clear and useful.
-
That graph is solid. Interestingly though, monetary issues and crime did not spike along with the spike in immigration. Sort of surprising imo
-
Interesting data on the UKhttps://twitter.com/benatipsosmori/status/992331529140539392?s=20 …
-
Indeed. Wondering which concerns have stepped up since the decline start in 2015
