I've argued for a long while that the economic drivers of populism are overstated (see our book for why). It is partly why the left has replied so poorly to it. And here's some more evidence for that thesis

I think most of the left cannot view as legitimate any working class complaints that aren't rooted in material concerns, even as the majority of their own grievances are cultural and moral in nature.

Thanks Matthew. The new govt is as I understand it, aiming to improve economies of north/midlands (roughly). Is that intervening on the wrong causal driver? Are they making same mistake as left theorists?
It seems to be aiming to hit the cultural values too - 'taking back control', law and order, attempts to look less London-centric, etc
And we can see (both) your analysise being played out, and indeed, being played by this Gov (Cummings?). But, while this might give short-term satisfaction to some who are disaffected, how do you view longer term prospects for UK, if we've hunkered down on English nationalism??
I think it’s possible to adjust the dial to ‘slower’ on cultural change, as is the case on economic change, to get to where the median voter is
In my theory: the higher debt burden goes, the higher stress levels = frictions and populism. World is currently under the heaviest debt burden since WW2, the highest one in peace since 1900...
