Merkel weakened, Macron an outlier, populist right returns to gvt in Norway, Slovenia tilts right, migration & terrorism dominate thinking about EU, trust in EU remains low, stronger "Visegrad +" alliance against 'liberal' Europe ...

Question: Did these populists change their position away from leaving the EU?
-
Some are openly sceptical/outers e.g. Sweden D, AfD, others less so but I would argue by politicizing issues like migration they are broadening audience for anti-EU campaigns long term a-la UKIP
-
The UK was uniquely susceptible to the conflation of free movement and external migration. If you live in a country where driving across the border is a daily reality that misunderstanding is much harder.
-
And in the part of the UK where that is the case, support for Brexit has collapsed.
-
If you're talking about Kent, I am not seeing any evidence support for leaving the EU has collapsed.
-
Can assure you as someone who lives in Kent, that support for Brexit is increasing, not declining.
-
When you say "Brexit", you mean the common rule book for goods trade, the mobility framework for labour and the facilitated customs partnership, right? Because that's what Brexit means.
-
No, it's what Theresa May's sell out dictated by Merkel looks like.

"AfD now second in the polls" is a weasel, Matthew. They have been second before, not for long, never above 15% and the vast majority of polls taken since the election have had them third.
-
Hiya, the election was very recent David. I think you get the broader point.

And just wait until Brexit is over. No matter how painful the process is for the UK, once the UK is out the other side, there will be a “British model” (in addition to the Norwegian and Swiss ones), which parties like the Swedish SD, Danish DFP and others might find attractive
-
True. But also look at the numbers once some of those parties entered government ...
-
I'm pretty convinced by
@CatherineDVries analysis. In short term "alternative state" of Brexit may look chaotic. Long term I am not so sure... -
Me too. I think the EU needs to change dramatically, eg. with much more flexibility and radical decentralisation, otherwise others will follow UK, as I set out here: https://www.jstor.org/stable/pdf/j.ctt20krxf8.13.pdf …

Why use term "nationalist populist" instead of far-right?
-
Hi our forthcoming book deals with that
-
No one cares about your terrible book, just start calling the far right the far right like any normal person.
-
Far right is a misleading term
-
especially the way it's loosely used today, to some people today, Michael Foot would be termed far right
-
Could you give me an example of someone who has been unfairly labelled far right.
-
Why don't you start with Farage
-
Farage is far right.
