Today, I talked to a friend who is an Uber driver who has become so deeply depressed. He works all the time & feels like he’s losing his mind. “This is not life,” he said. Precarious, underpaid gig work is not just an economic problem, it is a major public health issue.

Yeah I relate too. Someone recently said it would be weird when they finally left gig work cycles bc they'd be able to go to a movie without feeling like they could be missing work and holy cow I felt that.

Yes! If I'm not working, I'm feeling bad about not working.

How about trying a different line of work? Gig work with unstructured time is not for everyone

How do you recommend I schedule job interviews when I have to work all the time just to cover basic necessities?

It's exactly what the term "wage slavery" was invented to describe. There are good criticisms of the conflation with chattel slavery, but bearing those in mind, it nevertheless holds up.

We've been directly asked to use different wording because that term is racially insensitive. This is why we're saying "starvation wages" or "inhumane wages" or "poverty cycle". This is exactly why we're not using that wording. I used to use it too - know better, do better.
