Oh hello! Those "know the signs of sex trafficking" cards we discussed the other day? Created to stop a fictitious sex trafficking boom before the super bowl? Uber is using that to monitor the behaviour of women passengers now. This has historical president, let's talk a out it.https://twitter.com/Uber/status/1092150210870923264 …

This has a long history. In the medieval period sex workers had to live and work in particular parts of cities, or wear particular clothing that would mark out their profession. That way they would not be mistaken for the "decent women" who didn't have an independent livelihood.

Here what Uber and this terrible trash "sex trafficking" charity are doing is saying that insufficient feminine deference marks one out as being forced into sex work. This is absolutely horrifying if you are a woman. Clothes that are "inappropriate"? Trafficked.

Not wanting to make small talk with some guy you just met? Trafficked. Not wanting to make small talk with a man you are alone in a car with who you just met while wearing sexy clothes? Oh you better believe that is trafficked.

Of course what is appropriate both in terms of clothing and small talk is highly subjective. What women are being told here is that if they don't read what an individual thinks is the appropriate level for dress and behaviour and perform it, they can be reported to the police.

In other words, your job as a woman is to constantly be reading people and doing whatever emotional labour is necessary in order to convince them that you have a right to be in public as a "decent" or "proper" woman. Anything less than that makes you suspect and a sex slave.

But don't worry! This man you don't want to talk to will SAVE you - whether you want to be saved or not - by turning you over to the carceral state! HOORAY! Love 2 be saved by being imprisoned and having s criminal record 4 life which doesn't allow me to get another job.

This will also, always and of course, be more of a problem for foreign women as well. Dressed sexy, not talking, and with an accent? There is only one reason that could be - you have been trafficked. So if YOU get flagged to the cops you might also be deported! Hooray! So saved!

This entire conversation about trafficking and the panic about sex work is steeped in misogyny. It assumes that any women who aren't deferent aren't *really* women, and that any woman will always be modest and accomodating unless forced. We must perform at all times.

The rescue industry is a deeply misogynistic enterprise which more or less polices the behaviour of women under the guise of saving us. They are not your friends or the friends of trafficked women. They are also more cruel than medieval would be rescuers:https://goingmedievalblog.wordpress.com/2018/04/18/on-sex-work-and-the-concept-of-rescue/ …

This has real and chilling effects for whether or not women can participate in society, and frankly, that's the goal. We are meant to only participate in society as the property of a man, which is somehow better than being a sex worker because ... I just said so.

Taking this into consideration, the good news for women is that - for now - we are still allowed to make consumer choices. I would encourage you to think about whether you want to patronise a company that thinks you must be monitored and that they are saving you when they do.
