Stores need two things to make magic profitable: pack sales and singles turnover. Modern doesn't sell packs and sells singles less. When stores aren't making money on Magic, they're not going to host events or teach new players
"Masters" packs have sold worse at each new release... and still they sell better to casual players than eternal players because eternal players just buy cards for one or two decks and don't need "random" old crap

I'm pretty sure MM17 was the best selling masters set to date. Eternal and iconic probably didn't sell well bc no matter what non-land cards you have, it's still gonna be a $3k mana base for legacy.

Also from what I gather, stores are more happy selling multiple $70-80 Lili, of the Veil than 1 $110 occasionally. You know what is sold out at my LGS? Bolt. You know what they have stacks of? Fatal Push and Path.
