Can someone explain what this "box breaking" nonsense is? People are paying for other people to open packs for them? Do the cards then get mailed? Please explain

I think for the MTG breaks everybody just gets assigned packs and they open them for you on stream. I don't see the appeal. It's really popular for Pokemon right now too.
This seems like some weird perversion of kinderegg culture.

some sociologist probably has a good explanation of shared experiences through digital social media or something. I guess we're just old fashioned where we want to open our cards ourselves because that's what's fun about it.
