Can someone explain what this "box breaking" nonsense is? People are paying for other people to open packs for them? Do the cards then get mailed? Please explain

If you only want to collect a specific team it's good, but I'm with you. If I'm spending money on cards I want to open them myself. I've never joined a box break and never will.
So on the Magic ones do you buy all the red cards? Is it a deal? What am I missing?

I think for the MTG breaks everybody just gets assigned packs and they open them for you on stream. I don't see the appeal. It's really popular for Pokemon right now too.
