"Wizards better watch out because <RandomDigitalCardgame0012> does X, Y, & Z!" I keep seeing this trash over and over. The bulk of digital Magic players play Magic because they like Magic and the community built around Magic. It's not because Magic is a digital card game.

Magic is a lifestyle game. You can't possibly read all the content released in a given week. You can't watch a fraction of the videos made every week. You can barely keep up with tournament results week to week. No other games come close to othat level of content immersion.

You see the same thing in paper. Other card games pop up and people sing their praises and they're dead within two years. Magic has the most extensive R&D, worldbuilding, and design teams in the business. There's a reason Magic is chasing 30 years.

The problem is if WoTC believes the digital card game idea; they've definitely been directing resources away from their core strengths, which you've highlighted here

They haven't. They expanded their resources to create Arena, they didn't pull people out of R&D and throw them into the coding room.

Maybe on the organized play / marketing side of things?

The changes in the top end of organized play are due to that being a failed marketing platform for over a decade. Wizards is just putting their money where their mouth is when it comes to casual players being the bulk of Magic's player base.
