Disagree with this. EDH/collectors are important but you also need a format where players are compelled to buy every few months & on ramp via smaller card pool. Std sets are $75-100M in paper, still far above premium releases, even accounting for margin gaps. #mtgfinance
Closer, but not quite there. Recurring purchases combined with a format that is attainable for someone just getting into the game. The number of people that say "I'm interested in trying this Magic thing out" and buying into Legacy is virtually 0... but Standard, that's easy.
Standard's greatest weakness and greatest strength is rotation. Don't like a format? Wait three months and it's renewed. Haven't played in ten years? No buggy, these 5-7 sets contain everything and are regularly available.
Yup. A standard deck requires you to learn 12-15 cards, then slowly gain meta knowledge as you play. An EDH game is 400 cards with much higher variance as to what folks bring to the table. Totally different brand roles.
