A little more detail: Originally EDH only allowed the Elder Dragons from Legends as commanders, later this changed. Highlander came from the catchphrase from the movies: there can only be one (of each card). Thus the name.
And "Highlander" is copyrighted, so when Wizards got involved, they had to come up with a new name
