Its the same product, with the same manufacturing costs on the same distribution network. They increased the supply price to the retailer to 95% of retail simply because they could and it was more profitable to do so.
"Retail" on a booster pack has been $3.95 for roughly 15 years at this point. Cost is roughly 55% of that now

I don’t know a single LGS that sells booster boxes for $144. Customers think they’re being gouged at $100 because they can get them from online volume retailers who are essentially selling them at the price an LGS buys at wholesale. Eliminating MSRP was a mistake.

There's two just north of DC. And people will still scream "support your LGS" when you laugh at them openly for $144 boxes.
