Not abdicating anything. Tbh I don’t see any of the hot button political issues coming up at an LGS. If it did though, I would assume ppl could talk and agree/disagree without shunning needing to be done.

“Abortion is wrong” and “oppose illegal immigration” soft-pedals conservative stances and fails to engage with what many people find grotesque about those positions—the use of state violence against marginalized groups to achieve those policies.

Polls indicate that most Americans oppose illegal immigration. Polls also indicate that as a pregnancy goes on support for abortion drops drastically. They aren’t conservative stances: they’re American stances.

Again, “support” and the like is avoiding the actual conversation I’m trying to have (and that conservatives go through great pains to avoid, as you’re doing now): what are the actual policies that you support? What does legislation that “opposes” these issues look like to you?

Because once you say “throw doctors/women in jail” or “break up families and deport people” or whatever it actually is, a lot of people who have intuitions “opposing” abortion/illegal immigration say “holy shit never mind”

Imagine reacting to Eric Garner's death by saying "polls indicate that most Americans think you shouldn't sell loose cigarettes"

Right. OF COURSE people are going to have an intuition that abortion becomes less palatable as the pregnancy develops. Until you ask “and therefore we should throw people in jail” you aren’t asking a real question.

Do all conservatives take this approach though? I strongly doubt it. I oppose a lot of common behaviours as unethical. I dont go calling for those people to be imprisoned though.

No, some just say "that's just how I feel" or "we'll just have to agree to disagree" and refuse to explain or defend their horrible positions.

Is it a 'horrible position' because they want to do something detrimental to others? or because they have a point of view that differs from yours? There is a difference you know.

There's very few "conservative" viewpoints debated these days that are neither doing something detrimental to others or preventing the relief of pain in others.

It's mostly trying to legislate one's own narrow worldview and pretending it's fine because everyone already agrees with you anyway

Yeah Ok. I'm losing track of this argument. Given i'm probably the only non-american engaged in this conversation I'm starting to get the feeling I have a different interpretation of what it means to be a conservative.
