Hot take regarding GPs: Wizards has long said that the bulk of players never attend competitive events. Why would they continue to invest money in archaic marketing that doesn't even target it's core demographic?

I suppose I'm fine with that perspective, but then why not stress the casual part of the events? I would never again play in a constructed tournament at that level, but I still go for the side events (and would draft/sealed still for sure)
Wizard's says that most players never play in a sanctioned event period, not just competitive REL. They also say most players never enter a game store.

That seems... doubtful? And also like it wouldn't have anything to do with GPs that have been successful events for years on end?

Wizards has made that claim repeatedly for over a decade. This move is them putting their money where their mouth is.
