We are running a small experiment where 0.3% of viewers will see an auto-generated thumbnail, instead of your custom thumbnail. We are not removing the ability to create your custom thumbnail, but we hope to gain insights on auto-generated thumbnails for the future.

I'm guessing this is because theyre working on some machine learning algorithm to generate more appealing thumbnails and need a bigger dataset to test/learn from, and the feedback loop is click through rate...but this inherently implies that they will lose click through rate.

I wonder if youtube realizes theyre screwing with creators' incomes by doing stuff like this without consent and without an option to opt out....Im sure they do, and just dont care at this point. Part of the reason I rely on Patreon rather than youtube ads (that and 95% of my

Also while my custom thumbnails are a specially picked still from the video and some text overlay, other people put a *lot* of work into their custom thumbnails, and would rather them be displayed than some random still from the video.

Also the other problem I have with this, is that any information they glean from A/B testing, will be used internally *only* and not provided to content creators to help improve content on their platform, which is ridiculous but how its always been.

So at least, @teamyoutube, if you're going to run A/B testing like this that affects content creators' click through rate, without actually getting consent or providing an option to opt out, AT LEAST provide the information gleaned from the tests at the end, so we can improve our

I guess I gleaned over something here, thats a bit more 'content creator specific' knowledge: Youtube recently switched to a model that *heavily* incentivizes clickthrough rate. That is, how often someone even clicks on your video in the first place. So suddenly, everyone,

Finding out about stuff like this through Twitter replies is ridiculous YouTube. You are taking away a very important aspect of our creativity. I love making my own thumbnails. Give channels a heads up and an option to opt out.

"Oh its so negligible, it only affects 0.3% of users" Alright. Lets do some math. Over the course of my rather small channel's views the last 28 days, I've had 65000 impressions and a rather low 4.8% cilckthrough rate, resulting in just under 6000 views. Lets lower that click

through rate by about 0.3%, because users dont see an expected thumbnail style or what have you. That could be updwards of 200-300 people not watching, assuming nothing else affected. Again, not much for a small channel like mine.

There are channels that get in a couple hours, what I get in a month. This could be literally 10s of thousands of views, and 100s of thousands of minutes of watch time just *poof* gone because people dont see their normal thumbnails. Its SUCH a big factor in click through rate now

(Also yes that math is a bit wonky because of the way youtube displays click throughs based on impressions. ~70% of my views are not from impressions, which is *high* because im such a small channel, sharing things with you all. Bigger channels get recommended far more often)

Anyway. TL;DR: Youtube yet again is experimenting with creators' work flows and income without so much as a notification, let alone an opt out, and wont even provide the data in the end as a token gesture to help creators, because they never do.
