Many are convinced that post-pandemic corporate America will have a hybrid workforce, in which most people work remotely and companies save on real estate. But the hybrid workplace is merely an illusion, @JonLevyTLB argues, for four reasons.http://bos.gl/b2S8tgi

Reason #1: The Allen Curve. In the '70s, MIT Professor Thomas J. Allen discovered that office communication increased exponentially the closer desks were. “Even in the age of Slack, email, and Zoom, the fact remains: Out of sight is often out of mind," writes @JonLevyTLB.pic.twitter.com/w0bVD5LWRb

Reason #2: Trust. “As distance increases, teams need higher levels of trust to function. And trust is traditionally created through little actions that are more fluid in person.” Those working in-person may bond more than those working remotely.pic.twitter.com/sKWghylEUI

“Those in the office will feel a much greater sense of belonging, and those who aren’t will often be seen as outsiders or an afterthought,” @JonLevyTLB writes on trust. A divide between in-person and remote employees could breed resentment and even paranoia.

Reason #3: Working from home can be too convenient. Commuting gives us time to process our days, let our minds wander, and explore ideas. Additionally, “office life forces transitions and breaks throughout the day.”pic.twitter.com/eJJY8ZVAKv

Reason #4: Belonging. “It is clear that we are not destined to be alone,” @JonLevyTLB writes. It’s hard to create a sense of belonging from a distance, but it’s even harder when employees have different home lives — or have never even met the rest of the team.pic.twitter.com/zzGbd43TTJ

Is it possible to have a well-functioning hybrid workplace? Maybe. Employees and companies would need: - Reminders about who their team members are - Cultural practices to allow time for open idea exploration - Events that allow employees to connect in deep wayspic.twitter.com/WUCjn4slBu

This is complete bs. "Commuting gives us time to process"? How about the time I now have to spend letting my mind wander at home in my beautiful garden? Now that I dont have to commute I have time to work on projects that actually matter to me. Keep your nasty office culture.

Seriously, my wife gets to play w the kids during her lunch hour now. Gets more sleep in the morning and once she's done w work she walks away from her desk to relax instead of fighting traffic.

Lol “working from home can be TOO convenient” — top-notch parody of a bureaucratic dystopian hellworld in this thread lmao

not the best language, but the point has actually been expressed to me by clients.. so for some, their commute has served a useful purpose.

The Globe has been on a downward trend for a while now. This reads like an onion article.
