  1. Look at our museum! Isn't it lovely!? Would you like to be involved in making it even better? We are looking to recruit three voluntary advisors, who will provide our Board of Trustees with expert advice and support. Check out the link for more info!

Yesterday morning I headed back to Glen Coe in hope for a few sunrise photos over these beautiful mountains. No sun, just hailstones, snow and wind. Still, I love their rawness and beauty. Imagine living there!

How long does it take to put together an exhibition? 🤔 For years this area has held our 'Local Shops' display, but we thought that it was time for a change!

Have you been to see our beautiful thatched roof? It is one of only around 250 left in the country! And because ours is thatched with heather, it is even rarer!

1692: 120 redcoat soldiers arrived in Glencoe and were billeted with the MacDonalds. For 12 days, they shared food, drink & stories, but what happened next has gone down in history as one of the most shameful & heinous acts ever committed on Scottish soil...

We got a correct answer for our over on Facebook, and some very close ones here! This is horse-hoof fungus, which can usually be found growing on birch trees and was used to make early shinty balls.

"Wherever I wander, wherever I rove The hills of the Highlands for ever I love" - Robert Burns. Burns may have been from Ayrshire, but his heart was in the Highlands. We hope you are celebrating tonight with haggis, dancing and a wee dram! Slàinte Mhath! 🥃🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Some photos of the museum's beautiful heather roof being rethatched in 1971 and 1991. In 1991, heather became scarce so it had to be collected from the other side of the loch! a bundle of heather is called a "hug", referring to the amount you could hold in your arms!

Another peek at our Clan Donald Genealogy Tree. This beautiful chart was damaged in 1984 when an arsonist set fire to the museum roof, but was later restored thanks to a grant from the Gordon Fraser Charitable Trust.

Our cruck-framed cottage before restoration. 'Cruck' buildings have the bearing beams of the roof coming down the inside walls, keeping the weight of the thatch off the walls. our cottage is the only surviving cruck building in Glencoe?

An image from the archives showing some traditional thatched cottages in Glencoe Village. In the background, you can see the Monument to the Massacre of Glencoe, which was erected in 1883.
