I just wrote a post about the Aura idea on reddit. I really think it would be the best solution.
That's not really a complete solve though. Even if it's toned down you don't want anything that could even remotely be confused.

Taunts are just not the same,nor a constant and portraits are one @ a time. New skins/mounts are too much to do.There aren't many options :/
