How auspicious is it that I finish my piece on today of all days? A harbinger of the new age now. I wrote about the 2-26 Incident, Mishima Yukio, the differences between prewar and postwar Japan and agrarianism. Please have a read.

  3. Much of Japanese approach to the mainland throughout history has been coloured by the copious amounts of Baekje royalty that fled to Japan. In the Kojiki you see excerpts of aristocratic scions weeping about not being able to visit their ancestors' tombs.

  4. This issue with Tang & our relationship with ancient Korean kingdoms is something that needs to be addressed at some point. The nature of the mainland directly affect Japanese ontology (in a McLuhanian sense bcuz of the imported technologies incl. kanji, centralisation, etc.)

Many Japanese seem to regard the numerous polities in the mainland over history as being ALL & PERPETUALLY the Tang Empire no matter the era (for good reason, they imported TANG technologies). CCP regime is probably thought of in a similar if not slightly different fashion

Rejecting Westphalia would vastly broaden their avenues to expression & independence while paying more respect to their heritage. This is why I said that the imperial house (not the government that "represents the nation") should make peace with Ainus through a pact of friendship

Not only is that thinking narrow— it also winds up ultimately being harmful & distorting to the thing they wish to highlight. It reframes the history & ontology of the region through a pseudo-Europa Universalis lens (very common & horrible disease but that's post-history for you)

As much as I agree with Rob Kajiwara's sentiment for highlighting of Ryukyu traditions & autonomy— he & other independence / separatist activists all share the same crippling weakness: thinking in terms of absolute Westphalian sovereignty

aside from the odd Nichirenist, when did "Japan" (who is "Japan" here? most likely referring to super specific wartime bureaucrats) do these things? he's correct abt Okinawa, should restore the kingdom & autonomy to our cousins... but otherwise no point in tweet
