This is not a “don’t hold local governments accountable” post. We are all accountable. I’m just trying to connect the dots in our political discourse. State and feds seem more removed, but their consistent defunding of recovery & housing infrastructure has had huge consequences.

This has resulted in hundreds of people languishing in jail with severe mental health and/or substance use disorders. In addition to the human suffering, we also experience huge strains on our local level systems. Again, our state and feds are failing us all on these issues.

King County’s jails see hundreds of people every year who legally should not be there because they’re not deemed competent to stand trial. Under its own laws, the state should be removing those individuals from jail and providing restoration services within 7 days. It’s not.

We need more accountability from our state and federal governments on local issues like homelessness and behavioral health. “It is now 2023. The state failed to meet its goals. The resulting logjams have overloaded both jails and psychiatric facilities.”

Yesterday, we hosted the Garfield Basketball boys and girls teams at the King County Council! Fun times. Congrats to the champs and thank you for bringing the state trophy to District 2 🏆 🏀
