It’s as if the be need to defend ya favs from criticism is more imperative than holding them accountable for their simpleminded statements about topics in which they know very little. JayZ is not a historian, political scientist or economist. Read a flipping book, y’all.

I’m really disappointed in the comments here. Lots of people don’t seem to understand what gentrification really is. Black people have been socially and economically maligned for centuries and now were supposed to invest into our neighborhoods with... what capital exactly?

Because silly you're still displacing an entire group of people. Can you not read you're upgrading a community to middle-class taste.... you're going into a community where relatively poor people live and raising the cost of living and etc. You're displacing them.

I don’t care how great of a rapper he is. There’s something very dangerous about this. Rappers discuss money A LOT, but Jay is codifying his lyrics as “social change”.

Jay z just told Black folk to gentrify their own neighborhoods for the same of word play. I see people arguing that isn’t what Jay meant. Are we sure? The irony is that there are literally Black folk gentrifying hoods, literally working with planners to displace Black poor folk.

Jay Z rapping about gentrification is hilarious especially since he helped fuck over people in Brooklyn for the Atlantic Yards project & Barclays Center -anon

What is even more fascinating is how it is the local govts which enable it. Gentrification wouldn’t exist or thrive if it wasn’t for them. Basically, class warfare enabled by state.

but please, stop taking political & economic advice from billionaires, but specifically shawn carter. 😭 go ask non-white brooklyn residents how they feel about jay-z and his investment in the barclay’s center. that man is a whole gentrifier himself, so ofc he’s endorsing it.

also, you can’t truly understand gentrification unless you understand the role the state plays in enabling such structural dispossession, and how gentrifiers wield and weaponize state power to enact violence on residents.

gentrification is the SYSTEMIC displacement of poor & working class, most often, but not limited to BLACK and BROWN people. it relies on cultural and ethnic genocide to sustain itself. it’s never a “good” or “positive” thing, regardless of who is doing it, lol.

gentrification being vastly misused and belittled to meaning “improve your communities, if you have the means to do so” rather than being understood as a form of class struggle, or rather class warfare, regardless of who is partaking in it, is just.... *kisses finger* bittersweet
