    Just beat the boss of the Fire World in Shadow Tower, and one interesting thing I've noticed is that beating the boss of a world causes every zone in that world to brighten. View distance is increased and it just feels less oppressive. Neat little detail.

    To be clear: this isn't just about resource usage. It's about privacy. It's about usability. It's about development trajectory and about the browser not being even more shit in the future. FF is *better* than Chrome but that's not saying a whole lot.

    So on the subject of games where the journey is the reward, recommend me some! I'm currently playing Shadow Tower (so no From recs, please) but I also enjoy stuff like Knytt.

    To clarify, what I'm really getting at here is the subtle difference between story and narrative. I much prefer the former informing *my* actions rather than the latter, which *dictates* my *characters'* actions.

    It's the difference between deciding to visit Gulg Volcano and fix up the fire crystal, and having the game wait on me to grind out X levels, spending Y nights at an inn, in preparation for the Big Pivotal Event That Happens Tomorrow (and those Y nights never actually happened)

    I guess I'm going to wrap this up by lamenting the lack of actual player agency vis-a-vis... discovery, I guess? It's a subtle thing, but I like feeling like a game moves forward because of something I did, not that I did something that the game needed to move forward.

    I'm going to namedrop From Software here as a modern-day example of this (with King's Field, Shadow Tower, and yes Dark Souls, etc being examples) but there's precious little of this these days, and it's unfortunate.

    This is why I still really like FF1 and DQ1; the player feels like they have more agency because they're unpacking events that informed the state of the world as it is, rather than just reacting to things that happen. The world informs the journey; the journey is about the world.

    JRPGs started as systems wrapped around a quest, where the journey was the reward. But they fairly quickly morphed into being story-driven, with the systems being the things you had to interact with in order to get fed more plot drips.

    Been thinking a lot about the structure of JRPGs lately, and how narrative is generally cast as the reward for playing well, but often it isn't really interesting enough or sufficient to carry games on its own.
