Something I've wanted to write for a while, on miracle cures, our love - and sometimes need - for them, and why they just aren't possiblehttps://medium.com/@gidmk/there-are-no-miracle-cures-7252ea5043f3 …

We love the message "this will cure old age", even though a) old age isn't a disease and b) there's unlikely to ever be a single thing that prevents us ageing

Cancer is similar - there are so many thousands of types of cancer, the complexity alone makes it pretty much impossible for a single "cure" to be found

The problem is that we love the IDEA of a miracle cure. One pill daily for endless life and health? Sign me up!

So we thirst after stories of scientists finding that one cure that will fix it all, even though we all know that there's probably never going to be one anyway

Great post. This is something that happens a lot in complementary and alternative medicine. My <insert favourite CAM treatment> works for everyone and every health condition because it's "holistic". Complete nonsense of course.

Let's also notice how concentrating on a petri dish cure (or on genetics, neurobiology, etc) absolves us of any responsibility to improve the social circumstances that contribute to disease.

Definitely. We want a pill that will cure disease because that shifts the burden of responsibility away from society

I'm glad you put disclaimer at the end about old age not actually being a disease. It used to frustrate me no end when asking patients about family history & what their parents died from to be told old age or 'natural causes'. This was for exclusion criteria for clinical trials.
