There is no doubt that you can lose weight on any diet that restricts what you eat. The questions are which works better wrt lipids, basal metabolic rate, insulin levels, hunger, visceral fat etc and effect on risk of future chronic disease

See restriction shouldn't be the key. To restrict puts foods off limits, which of course potentially leads to binge eating etc etc. Yes the markers are key to better health, which would show if you stopped eating high fat/high sugar nutritionally inadequate food.
